Rinpung Dzong (Bhutan)

Weather…

Rinpung Dzong, also known as Paro Dzong, is a massive Buddhist monastery and fortress in the Paro District, widely considered one of the finest examples of Bhutanese architecture. Its full name, 'Rinchen Pung Dzong', translates to 'Fortress on a Heap of Jewels'. While its origins date back to the 15th century, the current monumental structure was built in 1644 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. It serves as both a religious center and the administrative seat for the district. The dzong is accessed via a traditional cantilever bridge called Nyamai Zam, which spans the Paro Chhu river. Inside the fortress, there are 14 shrines and chapels, with the monks' assembly hall being particularly ornate. Every year, it hosts the Paro Tshechu festival, featuring the unfurling of a giant Thangka (Thongdrel). The fortress survived major earthquakes and a devastating fire in 1907, after which it was meticulously restored to its original state. Its massive walls and hilltop position highlight its historical role in defending the valley against Tibetan invasions.
