Jitchu Drake is a prominent and technically challenging peak in the Himalayas, located in close proximity to the sacred Mount Jomolhari. At a height of 6,714 meters, it rises majestically into the sky and is known for its steep, ice-covered flanks that present significant challenges to mountaineers. The mountain, much like its famous neighbor, holds spiritual significance and is associated with protector deities. The first ascent was only accomplished in 1983 by an expedition. Due to its rugged shape and avalanche danger, it is considered one of the more difficult peaks in the region. Its distinctive silhouette, often photographed alongside Jomolhari, defines the panorama of Jigme Dorji National Park and is an impressive example of the wild and untouched beauty of the Bhutanese Himalayas.

Getting there
This striking, rugged peak is mostly part of longer high-altitude treks, often in combination with routes around nearby Jomolhari. Access begins deep in the valleys, from where guided hiking groups ascend for several days to reach the base camp areas.
Best season
The windows for safe passage and clear views of the steep, icy flanks typically open in spring (March to May) and during the short autumn (September to November). Outside these times, snow, extreme fog, or monsoon rain severely hinder progress.
Terrain & paths
The landscape surrounding the mountain is alpine, harsh, and extremely demanding, characterized by rocky ascents and moraine-covered valleys. The routes are sometimes narrow and steep, requiring absolute freedom from vertigo and fitness for long daily stages.
What to bring
For a trek into these altitudes, multi-layered expedition clothing is essential, as are professional, broken-in hiking boots that offer grip even on loose scree. Warm sleeping bags, a robust tent, and sufficient provisions are carried by the expedition team.
Parking
Travel by car ends in one of the accessible valley towns far below the mountain giants, where the vehicles of tour operators usually park together. From then on, the journey is invariably made on foot and with the help of pack animals.
Safety
In addition to the constant threat of altitude sickness, sudden weather changes require the utmost attention, which is why the guides' instructions must be strictly followed. Crevasses and rockfalls are real dangers for trekkers near the steep flanks.
Time needed
To be able to admire the mountain up close, travelers often join an eight to fourteen-day trek. Such an undertaking is not feasible as a simple day trip, but requires a deep immersion into the rugged mountain world over many days.
