Drukgyel Dzong Ruins
Drukgyel Dzong, meaning the 'Fortress of the Victorious Drukpa', is a major historical ruin and monastery fortress located in the upper Paro Valley. It was constructed in 1649 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to commemorate Bhutan's victory over an invading Tibetan-Mongol army. Due to its strategic location, the fortress controlled the main trade route to Tibet and served as a crucial defensive bulwark. In 1951, the complex was almost completely destroyed by a fire triggered by a butter lamp, after which it remained as an easy on the eye ruin for several decades. Recognizing its immense cultural significance, the government ordered its full reconstruction in 2016 to restore the fortress to its original grandeur. The rebuilding process adheres to traditional Bhutanese architectural techniques, utilizing neither modern blueprints nor nails. Today, Drukgyel Dzong stands as a symbol of national resilience and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List since 2012.
