Paro is a town in western Bhutan located in the Paro Chhu valley at an elevation of 2,250 meters. It has a population of about 15,000. Paro is home to Bhutan's only international airport, Paro Airport, known for its challenging approach among mountains. The iconic Taktshang Monastery (Tiger's Nest) clings to a cliff at 3,120 meters. Rinpung Dzong, a fortress built in 1646, houses district offices and a monastery. The economy relies on tourism, agriculture (rice, apples), and handicrafts. Paro is a hub for traditional arts, with numerous workshops for thangka painting and wood carving. The Paro Tshechu festival, held in spring, features masked dances. Kyichu Lhakhang, built in the 7th century, is one of Bhutan's oldest temples. The valley features trekking routes and is a gateway to the Haa Valley. Paro's airport handles over 100 flights per week during peak season.
