Weather…

Jomolhari, often called the 'Bride of Kangchenjunga,' is a 7,326-meter sacred mountain on the border between Bhutan and Tibet. It is one of the country's most famous peaks and is clearly visible from the Paro Valley. The mountain is considered the abode of the goddess Jomo, one of the five Tsheringma sisters, who are protector deities of Bhutan. Every year, the Jomolhari Mountain Festival is held at the base of the mountain, an event celebrating the culture of local communities and the importance of conservation, especially the protection of the snow leopard. The mountain was first climbed in 1937 by a British expedition. Today, climbing from the Bhutanese side is prohibited. The region around Jomolhari is a popular destination for trekking tours, which pass through pretty villages and pristine landscapes, offering spectacular views of the peak.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
This sacred and majestic peak is the centerpiece of one of the country's most famous trekking routes. The trek classically starts in Paro or Drukgyel Dzong and leads over several days along a scenic valley up to the base camp in Jangothang.
📅
Best season
To have the best chances for a cloud-free view of this mountain, the weeks from late March to May or from late September to November are optimal. In winter, the snow is usually too deep for treks, while in summer, the monsoon blocks any visibility.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The trail to the base camp traverses dense forests, vast alpine pastures, and desolate rocky deserts at high altitude. The terrain progressively steepens and requires crossing small rivers as well as navigating over loose, stony sections.
🎒
What to bring
Hikers must absolutely wear robust, waterproof mountaineering boots and bring clothing that can withstand rapid temperature drops. For the freezing nights in the tent, insulating mats and special down sleeping bags are indispensable to prevent severe exhaustion.
🅿️
Parking
The infrastructure for vehicles ends at the historic ruins at the starting point of the trek. Here, the tour guides organize the distribution of the loads onto the pack animals, while the transport drivers usually take the cars back to the valley.
⚠️
Safety
Because the mountain is sacred, climbing the peak is strictly forbidden; respect for local religious customs is mandatory. Furthermore, proper acclimatization on the way to the high base camp is absolutely necessary to avoid dangerous altitude sickness.
⏱️
Time needed
The classic trek to the viewpoint and the base camp typically spans about seven to nine days, including the necessary rest days. Those who wish to extend the tour can also hike further towards more challenging passes from this point.
