Citadel of Dinant (Belgium)

Weather…

The Citadel of Dinant stands spectacularly on a 100-meter-high rock overlooking the Meuse river, with a history spanning nearly a millennium. The first fortification at this site was established as early as 1040 to control the river valley. However, the current structure was built between 1818 and 1821 by the Dutch, who ruled the territory at the time. During World War I, in August 1914, the citadel was the site of fierce combat between French and German forces, leading to tragic events in the city. Today, the fortress houses a museum documenting the military history of the region and the daily lives of the soldiers stationed there. Visitors can reach the citadel either by cable car or by climbing 408 steps, enjoying a panoramic view over the town of Dinant from the top.
