Wavre (Waver) is the lively capital of the young province of Walloon Brabant, idyllically situated in the Dijle valley. Historically, the city gained significance through the "Battle of Wavre," which took place parallel to the Battle of Waterloo in June 1815 and helped shape the destiny of Europe. The historic Church of St. John the Baptist still preserves a cannonball from this battle embedded in its masonry. Today, Wavre is a flourishing and economically ascending city, often referred to as the "City of the Maca" (the city's symbol, a mischievous boy). Internationally, however, the city is best known as the location of Walibi Belgium, one of the largest and most popular amusement parks in the country, along with the associated Aqualibi water park. Wavre provides a successful blend of historical traces, modern shopping streets, and family-friendly attractions.
