Castle of Freÿr
Freÿr Castle is a magnificent manor house located on the banks of the Meuse river, often referred to as the 'Versailles of Belgium.' While its origins date back to a 14th-century fortress, the current structure is primarily a result of 16th-century Renaissance extensions and subsequent Baroque renovations. The castle holds significant historical weight as the site where the Treaty of Freÿr was signed in 1675 between France and Spain, marking an important diplomatic peace agreement. It has been owned by the same family for over 20 generations, allowing for the preservation of its authentic interior, including precious furniture, tapestries, and original wall paintings. The gardens of Freÿr, inspired by the French classical style of André Le Nôtre, are considered some of the most prestigious in Belgium. They feature a terraced layout and house a collection of orange trees that are over 300 years old, sheltered during winter in one of the oldest orangeries in the Low Countries. The castle's setting, set between steep limestone cliffs and the river, creates a dramatic atmosphere that harmonizes grand architecture with natural beauty.
