Castle of Spontin (Belgium)

Weather…

The Castle of Spontin, an impressive moated castle located in the Bocq valley in the Province of Namur, is considered one of the best-preserved examples of medieval architecture in Wallonia. The core of the complex, a massive dungeon, dates back to the 13th century and was built to protect the region against incursions. During the 14th and 15th centuries, the fortress was expanded into an aristocratic castle, with the addition of towers, curtain walls, and a drawbridge. Despite its formidable defensive appearance, the castle was transformed in the 16th century into a more comfortable noble residence in the Renaissance style. For several centuries, it was owned by the Beaufort-Spontin family, who significantly influenced the town's development. In the 19th century, architect Jean-Baptiste Bethune restored the castle in a neo-Gothic spirit to further emphasize its medieval character.
