Halle is a lively city in Flemish Brabant, located southwest of Brussels on the banks of the Senne river and the Charleroi-Brussels canal. The city has been a highly important Marian pilgrimage site since the Middle Ages. The centerpiece of the city is the magnificent High Gothic Basilica of Saint Martin, which houses the famous Black Madonna statue and was richly endowed by numerous members of the European nobility, including the Dukes of Burgundy. However, Halle is also known internationally as the "Gateway to the Hallerbos." This fairytale forest in the immediate vicinity attracts thousands of visitors every spring when millions of blooming bluebells transform the forest floor into a lively blue carpet. In addition, Halle celebrates one of the most colorful and traditional carnivals in Flanders and borders the Pajottenland, the home of the legendary Geuze and Lambic beers.
