Castle of Walzin (Belgium)

Weather…

The Castle of Walzin is one of Belgium's most photogenic landmarks famously perched on a sheer limestone cliff overlooking the Lesse river near Dinant. Its foundations date back to the 11th and 12th centuries when it served as a vital defensive stronghold protecting the upper Lesse valley. Throughout its long history the castle was besieged multiple times and suffered significant damage during the French Revolutionary wars in 1793. The structure we see today is largely the result of extensive 19th and early 20th-century renovations that transformed the ruins into a magnificent Neo-Gothic residence. Although the castle is privately owned and the interior remains closed to the public it is a major highlight for thousands of visitors who admire its facade while kayaking down the river. The dramatic integration of the masonry with the natural rock face makes Walzin a masterpiece of romantic architecture and a symbol of Walloon heritage.
