Sint-Truiden is a pleasant historic city in the heart of the Flemish Haspengouw region, the most important fruit-growing area in Belgium. Especially in spring, when millions of apple, pear, and cherry trees are in full bloom, the city is a popular tourist destination. Sint-Truiden was founded in the 7th century around an abbey built by Saint Trudo. Today, the imposing abbey tower, which visitors can climb, bears witness to this monastic past. The city's Grote Markt is the second largest in Belgium after Sint-Niklaas and is dominated by the magnificent historic town hall with its belfry. The city also has remarkable religious architecture, including the Romanesque Church of Our Lady and one of the most fascinating Beguinages in Flanders, which is known for its impressive medieval wall paintings and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
