Abbey of Celles (Belgium)

Weather…

The Abbey of Celles, better known as the Collegiate Church of Saint-Hadelin, is one of the most significant examples of Romanesque architecture in Belgium. The origins of the site are linked to Saint Hadelin, a monk from Aquitaine who settled here in the 7th century to found a monastery. The church visible today was constructed in the 11th century and is distinguished by its harmonious proportions and massive westwork featuring two towers. For centuries, it housed a community of canons until they relocated to Visé in 1337. The interior of the church preserves valuable artworks, including Romanesque capitals and a crypt dating back to the foundation era. The monument is situated in the pretty village of Celles, recognized as one of the most beautiful villages in Wallonia for its well-preserved historical heritage.
