Castle of Vêves (Belgium)

Weather…

The Castle of Vêves, situated near the village of Celles in the Province of Namur, stands as one of Belgium's most iconic examples of medieval military architecture. Its historical roots trace back to the 7th century, when Pepin of Herstal established a fortress on this strategic rocky outcrop. The current structure, characterized by its distinctive pointed towers and irregular layout, was largely shaped during the 15th century by the Beaufort family after previous versions were destroyed. Remarkably, the castle has remained in the possession of the same lineage for eight centuries, surviving the turmoil of the French Revolution. In the 18th century, the interior was renovated to reflect contemporary tastes while the external medieval silhouette was preserved. Today, it functions as a museum, showcasing authentic period furniture and providing insight into the aristocratic heritage of the Walloon region.
