Castle of Vêves (courtyard) (Belgium)

Weather…

The Castle of Vêves, located near the village of Celles, is regarded as one of Belgium's most striking examples of medieval military architecture, often described as a 'storybook castle.' Perched on a rocky outcrop, the current structure largely dates to the 15th century, though its foundations go back to the 7th century when Saint Hadelin built a chapel on the site. With its six pointed towers and defensive ramparts, it represents the archetypal knightly fortress, though its interior was refurbished in the 18th century in the more refined Louis XV style. For over 800 years, the castle has been held by the same lineage, the descendants of the Lords of Beaufort, resulting in a remarkably consistent collection of artifacts and decor. The distinctive courtyard featuring timber-framed galleries is a rare architectural survivor of the late Gothic and Renaissance periods. Despite numerous sieges and fires throughout the centuries, the castle was always faithfully restored. Today, Vêves operates as a private museum, showcasing historic armor, paintings, and furniture while narrating the aristocratic history of the Ardennes.
