Ardennes Highlands (Belgium)

Weather…

The Ardennes Highlands are a rugged, densely forested upland region that dominates the entirety of southeastern Belgium and extends into neighboring countries. As a remnant of the massive Variscan orogeny, the massif consists primarily of hard shales, quartzites, and sandstones that are highly resistant to erosion. Its highest elevations, such as the Signal de Botrange, exceed 600 meters and experience a noticeably cooler and wetter climate than the rest of the nation. The topography is characterized by river valleys cut deeply into the bedrock, frequently forming steep and spectacular cliffs. This largely inaccessible terrain has kept the Ardennes as one of the most sparsely populated areas in Central Europe to this day. The expansive forested tracts not only support the logging industry but also provide a crucial refuge for wildlife, including red deer and wild boar.
