Mardasson Memorial (Belgium)

Weather…

The Mardasson Memorial, imposingly situated on a hill near the town of Bastogne, is one of the most significant World War II monuments in Europe. It was erected to express enduring gratitude and to honor the more than 76,000 American soldiers who were killed, wounded, or went missing during the brutal Battle of the Bulge in the freezing winter of 1944-1945. Inaugurated in 1950 and designed by Belgian architect Georges Dedoyard, the monumental structure takes the unique shape of a five-pointed star, the emblem of the US Army. The exterior of the massive stone edifice features the names of the 48 US states of that era, applied in large bronze letters. Along the interior walls of the star-shaped galleries, the detailed narrative of the month-long winter battle is carved into the stone, alongside the insignias of the participating American battalions. Visitors can climb a spiral staircase to the roof of the memorial, which has sweeping panoramic views over the peaceful Ardennes landscape where fierce fighting once raged.
