Fleurus is a city in the Hainaut province with a historical legacy defined by its strategic role in European military history. The town's fields have hosted three major battles (in 1622, 1690, and 1794), with the 1794 engagement marking a revolutionary milestone: the first use of a reconnaissance balloon in warfare. In June 1815, just two days prior to his final defeat at Waterloo, Napoleon Bonaparte achieved his last strategic victory here during the Battle of Ligny against Prussian forces. Key historical sites include the Naveau Mill, where Napoleon observed the battlefield, and the General Gérard Museum in nearby Ligny. Today, Fleurus has successfully transitioned from a battlefield into a high-tech industrial hub, notably hosting the Institute for Radioelements (IRE), a world leader in nuclear medicine production. Its strategic position near Brussels South Charleroi Airport and the E42 motorway underscores its modern importance as a logistical and scientific center in Wallonia.
