Ruins of La Roche-en-Ardenne Castle (Belgium)

Weather…

The ruins of the Castle of La Roche-en-Ardenne stand majestically on a rocky promontory overlooking the Ourthe river and the surrounding Ardennes forest. Originally built on Roman foundations the medieval fortress was expanded in the 9th century to serve as the principal seat of the Counts of La Roche. Its commanding position allowed it to control the vital trade routes between the Meuse and Rhine valleys for several centuries. During the late 17th century French engineers under Louis XIV fortified the site making it nearly impregnable but it fell into decline after the 1703 siege. The castle suffered further structural damage during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II due to heavy aerial bombardment leaving behind the evocative ruins seen today. Visitors can explore the massive walls subterranean vaults and towers which offer dramatic views of the town below. The site is a hub for historical reenactments and is well-known for the legend of the ghost Berthe de La Roche who is said to haunt the battlements.
