Bastogne (Bastenach) is a historically highly significant city in the Luxembourg province, located deep in the heart of the Ardennes. Bastogne gained worldwide fame through the Battle of the Bulge (Ardennes Offensive) in the winter of 1944/1945 during the Second World War. The city was a crucial transport hub and was heroically defended against the siege of the German Wehrmacht by American troops (the 101st Airborne Division) under the command of General McAuliffe. Today, numerous monuments and museums commemorate this battle. The most famous is the star-shaped Mardasson Memorial, which honors the names of the fallen American soldiers, as well as the ultra-modern "Bastogne War Museum," which provides interactive insights into the events. Surrounded by the extensive forests and hills of the Ardennes, Bastogne is today also a popular center for nature tourism and outdoor activities.
