Zvanets Biological Reserve (Belarus)

Weather…

The Zvanets Biological Reserve, located in the deep south of the Brest region near the Ukrainian border, represents Europe's largest preserved mesotrophic fen mire. The vast, open plain of over 16,000 hectares is densely overgrown with tall sedge species and crisscrossed by a complex network of natural channels and shallow pools. This specific vegetation structure makes Zvanets one of the most valuable avifaunal centers on the continent. Nearly one-fifth of the entire global population of the globally threatened Aquatic Warbler nests in this specific microclimate. Because the ecosystem is extremely dependent on a stable water level, comprehensive hydrological restoration projects have been carried out to reverse the negative effects of historical drainage ditches in the surrounding area.
