Farny Church (St. Francis Xavier Cathedral) (Belarus)

Weather…

The St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, locally referred to as the Farny Church, is one of the most magnificent Baroque structures in Belarus, defining the skyline of Grodno. The construction of this impressive basilica was initiated by the Jesuits in the late 17th century and was consecrated in 1705 with both Russian Tsar Peter the Great and Polish King Augustus II in attendance. Its majestic facade, flanked by two towering 65-meter twin spires, is a masterpiece of Baroque architectural design. However, the true highlight of the cathedral is its dramatic interior: the 21-meter-high, intricately wood-carved main altar is adorned with dozens of sculptures of saints and angels, making it one of the tallest of its kind in Europe. Furthermore, one of the towers houses an incredibly rare mechanical clock featuring an original 15th-century mechanism, making it one of the oldest functioning tower clocks on the continent.
