The Old Castle in Hrodna, majestically situated on a high hill on the right bank of the Neman river, is an outstanding monument of Belarusian defensive architecture. The origins of the fortress date back to the 11th century when it served as a wooden defensive outpost. In the 14th century, Grand Duke Vytautas ordered the construction of a stone Gothic castle. The complex experienced its greatest golden age in the 16th century under the Polish King and Lithuanian Grand Duke Stephen Báthory, who had it rebuilt in the Renaissance style and made it his primary residence. The castle suffered severe damage during the Great Northern War and gradually fell into ruin. Currently, the building is undergoing a comprehensive restoration program aimed at recreating its magnificent appearance from Báthory's era and serving as the central historical museum of the region.
