The Church of Kish, dedicated to Saint Elisæus, is a remarkable early medieval monument located in the village of Kish, not far from Shaki. It is considered one of the oldest churches in the Caucasus, with a rich and complex history tied to Caucasian Albania, an ancient Christian kingdom that existed on the territory of modern-day Azerbaijan. The current structure largely dates to the 12th century, but archaeological excavations have revealed that a place of worship existed on this site much earlier, possibly as early as the 1st or 2nd century. Legend holds it was the first place where the apostle Elisæus preached. Today, the church, which has been carefully restored, operates as a museum, illuminating its fascinating history and that of Caucasian Albania.
