Hochosterwitz Castle (Austria)

Weather…

Hochosterwitz Castle in Carinthia is regarded as one of Austria's most impressive medieval fortifications, famous for its 14 distinct defensive gates. Perched atop a limestone rock approximately 175 meters high, the castle was first mentioned in documents in the year 860. Its current form was largely established in the 16th century under Baron Georg von Khevenhüller, who massively expanded the complex to defend against Ottoman invasions. Each of the 14 gates was equipped with sophisticated defense mechanisms, making it nearly impossible for attackers to reach the central keep. Particularly noteworthy is the armory, which houses a significant collection of historical weapons and armor, including the suit of armor belonging to the castle captain Burghard, who stood over two meters tall. The castle has been in the continuous possession of the Khevenhüller family since 1571. Today, it is accessible to visitors via the historical path through the gates or by an inclined elevator, offering panoramic views over the Klagenfurt Basin as far as the Karawanken mountains.
