Elbasan, located in central Albania along the Shkumbin River, is one of the nation's most historically significant urban centers. Founded in the 4th century as the Roman fortress Scampis, it served as a vital station on the Via Egnatia, the primary road connecting Rome with Constantinople. In 1466, Sultan Mehmed II rebuilt the city's fortification on the ancient ruins, renaming it Elbasan and establishing it as a major Ottoman administrative hub. The well-preserved fortress walls still enclose the historic old town, which houses the 1492 King's Mosque and the influential St. Mary's Church. During the communist era, Elbasan was transformed into Albania's industrial heartland, most notably through the massive 'Steel of the Party' metallurgical complex. Despite its industrial legacy, the city maintains a spirited cultural life and is the birthplace of 'Dita e Verës,' Albania's popular spring festival. The nearby Llixha thermal springs also contribute to the region's importance as a center for health and wellness tourism.
