Patos is an industrial city in southwestern Albania, located in the Fier district and primarily known as the heart of the Albanian oil industry. The city's development is closely linked to the discovery and exploitation of oil reserves in the early 20th century, with industrial extraction beginning around 1926. During the communist era, Patos was expanded significantly to house the workers of the surrounding oil fields, resulting in typical socialist urban planning. Geographically, Patos is situated in a hilly landscape on the edge of the Myzeqe plain, not far from the ancient site of Margëlliç, which testifies to the early settlement of the region. Today, oil extraction and processing remain the most vital economic sectors, with international companies playing a significant role. The city faces ecological challenges due to decades of industrial use but is working on modernization plans. Patos is an example of a city whose identity and prosperity are based almost entirely on natural resources.
