The town gained international prominence in June 2007 when it was visited by United States President George W. Bush, an event commemorated by a statue in the central square. Historically, the area serves as a low-lying extension of the more famous Krujë, playing a vital role in the regional logistics and trade networks of Central Albania. The local economy is heavily influenced by the industrial sector, particularly the massive cement production facilities that utilize the limestone resources from the nearby Krujë mountain range. In addition to its industrial base, the surrounding plains are intensively cultivated, contributing to the national supply of agricultural products and livestock.
