Lezhë Castle
Lezha Castle stands on a strategic hill 186 meters above sea level, overlooking the city and the mouth of the Drin River. The site's origins trace back to the ancient Illyrian city of Lissus, fortified in the 4th century BC with massive cyclopean walls that are still partially visible at the base. It is most famous as the location of the Covenant of Lezha in 1444, where Skanderbeg united the Albanian princes in a historic alliance against the Ottoman Empire. The current ruins predominantly showcase a blend of 15th-century Venetian military engineering and 16th-century Ottoman architectural modifications. Within the fortress walls, visitors can find the remnants of defensive towers, water cisterns, and an Ottoman mosque. The castle played a pivotal role in monitoring the Adriatic coastline and the inland trade routes throughout the Middle Ages. Today, it serves as a key historical monument, complemented by the nearby Skanderbeg Mausoleum situated in the ruins of St. Nicholas Cathedral at the hill's foot.
