Patok Lagoon is located on the Albanian Adriatic coast, positioned between the estuaries of the Mat and Ishëm rivers. Covering an area of about 400 hectares, the lagoon is distinguished by its unique landscape of traditional wooden fishing huts built on stilts, which have become a symbol of the area. The lagoon's geomorphology has been significantly shaped by river sediments and coastal currents over the centuries. In the 1980s, extensive drainage and reclamation projects altered much of the surrounding wetlands, yet the lagoon remains a critical habitat for marine life. It is particularly renowned as a key foraging ground for the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), with a dedicated conservation center operating on-site to rescue and study these animals. Patok also supports a diverse range of waterbirds and serves as a nursery for various Mediterranean fish species. Today, the lagoon is a popular destination for ecotourism and seafood gastronomy, while conservationists work to rehabilitate the ecosystem and promote sustainable local practices.
