Patok Lagoon (Albania)

Weather…

Patok Lagoon is located on the Albanian Adriatic coast, positioned between the estuaries of the Mat and Ishëm rivers. Covering an area of about 400 hectares, the lagoon is distinguished by its unique landscape of traditional wooden fishing huts built on stilts, which have become a symbol of the area. The lagoon's geomorphology has been significantly shaped by river sediments and coastal currents over the centuries. In the 1980s, extensive drainage and reclamation projects altered much of the surrounding wetlands, yet the lagoon remains a critical habitat for marine life. It is particularly renowned as a key foraging ground for the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), with a dedicated conservation center operating on-site to rescue and study these animals. Patok also supports a diverse range of waterbirds and serves as a nursery for various Mediterranean fish species. Today, the lagoon is a popular destination for ecotourism and seafood gastronomy, while conservationists work to rehabilitate the ecosystem and promote sustainable local practices.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
Patok Lagoon is best visited from May to October when sea turtles forage in the shallow channels. Spring and autumn also bring many migratory birds to rest in the marshes.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning sea turtles often surface to breathe and feed. Late afternoon birds are especially active as they return to roosts.
📜
Etiquette
Do not disturb sea turtles - keep your distance and do not touch them. Avoid boating too close to the channels as the propeller can injure the animals.
🎒
What to bring
A waterproof camera or binoculars with a polarising filter help spot turtles beneath the surface. Sunscreen and insect repellent are recommended as marshes have mosquitoes.
🧭
Getting there
The lagoon is on the central Albanian coast, near Patok, south of Lezhë. An unpaved road leads from the SH1 to a small parking area on the lagoon shore.
🦌
What to expect
Sea turtles surface only every 10-15 minutes - focus on one spot and wait patiently. A quiet observation post along the channels increases the chance of catching them breathing.
