The Mat River is a significant waterway in northern Albania, flowing for approximately 115 kilometers from the Martanesh highlands to the Adriatic Sea. It is a vital resource for the country's energy sector, as it powers the Ulëz and Shkopet hydroelectric plants, which were among Albania's first major industrial projects in the 1950s. The river flows through dramatic limestone gorges before reaching the coastal plains near Lezhë, where it has created a vast alluvial basin used for agriculture. Historically, the Mat region was a stronghold for Illyrian tribes and later served as a strategic theater during Skanderbeg's resistance against the Ottoman Empire. One of its most famous landmarks is the King Zog Bridge, an architectural marvel completed in 1927, known for its multiple arches. The river's drainage basin covers about 2,441 square kilometers, contributing significantly to the geomorphology of the northern Albanian coast. Today, the Mat River continues to be a crucial corridor for transportation and a key element of the region's hydrographic identity.
