Monastery of Shirgi (Albania)

Weather…

The Shirgi Monastery, dedicated to Saints Sergius and Bacchus, is located on the banks of the Buna River near Shkodra and stands as one of Northern Albania's most significant Christian landmarks. The current structure was founded in 1290 by the Serbian Queen Helen of Anjou, widow of King Stefan Uroš I, atop the remains of a 6th-century Benedictine abbey. Its architectural design harmonized Romanesque and Gothic elements, illustrating the cultural bridge between the Latin West and the Orthodox East. Throughout the Middle Ages, the monastery served as a vital spiritual center and a burial site for prominent local noble families, including the Balsha dynasty. Despite severe damage incurred from regional wars and the natural erosion of the Buna River, the surviving ruins continue to convey the site's former grandeur and artistic significance. The monastery is a symbol of the region's complex multicultural history, where Serbian, Albanian, and Venetian influences converged. Today, it is protected as a cultural monument and remains a destination for both pilgrims and history enthusiasts.
