Velipojë Nature Reserve (Albania)

Weather…

The Velipojë Nature Reserve is located in northwestern Albania on the Adriatic coast, situated directly at the mouth of the Buna River on the border with Montenegro. Covering an area of approximately 700 hectares, it represents a complex ecosystem of coastal lagoons, sand dunes, marshes, and pine forests. A central feature is the Viluni Lagoon, which serves as a crucial spawning ground for fish and a primary feeding site for numerous bird species. The flora is dominated by Mediterranean pine forests, planted in the 1960s to stabilize the dunes, which have now become vital habitats. The reserve is an internationally significant wintering ground for waterfowl and is part of the Albanian section of the Lake Shkodër-Buna Ramsar site. Due to the interaction between the fresh water from the Buna River and the salty sea water, a specialized brackish water flora and fauna has developed. The tourism development of the adjacent Velipojë beach poses challenges to the reserve regarding waste management and wildlife disturbance.
