Lissos Archaeological Site (Albania)

Weather…

The archaeological site of Lissos in Lezhë is one of Albania's most significant ancient urban centers, boasting a history that spans over 2,400 years. The city was likely founded around 385 BC by Dionysius I of Syracuse as a Greek colony, though it was built upon earlier Illyrian foundations. The most striking feature of the site is its massive Cyclopean walls, which encircle the acropolis on the hilltop and once protected an area of approximately 12 hectares. Strategically located near the mouth of the Drin River, Lissos served as a crucial seaport and a bridge for trade between the Illyrian interior and the Adriatic Sea. Throughout the Roman-Illyrian wars, the city held a pivotal role and was later captured by Philip V of Macedon before eventually becoming a Roman municipium. Archaeological remains including house foundations, temples, and later Byzantine fortifications illustrate the sophisticated engineering of its diverse inhabitants. Visitors can explore the multi-layered history of the site, which features striking views of the surrounding coastal plain and the sea.
