Rodoni Castle (Albania)

Weather…

Rodoni Castle, also known as Skanderbeg's Castle, is located on the Cape of Rodon along the Adriatic coast of central Albania. It was constructed in 1463 by order of the Albanian national hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, to secure a maritime outlet and bolster defenses against the Ottoman Empire. The fortress was strategically positioned on a narrow peninsula, with its walls built directly onto the cliffs. Only a few years after its completion, in 1467, the castle was destroyed by Ottoman forces, though it was later partially rebuilt by the Venetians. The most striking feature of the site is the integration of the military fortification with the nearby medieval Church of St. Anthony, famous for its ancient frescoes and beachside location. Today, the massive circular towers and sections of the perimeter walls remain, standing defiantly against sea erosion. Rodoni Castle serves as both a significant historical monument and a site of exceptional natural beauty, where medieval history meets the rugged Adriatic shoreline.
