Shkopet Lake is an artificial reservoir in central Albania, formed by the damming of the Mat River within a spectacular limestone gorge. The Shkopet dam is a significant engineering feat of the socialist era and remains vital for the region's power supply. Getting there
Accessed via the scenic national road that winds closely alongside the Mat river valley in northern Albania. Finding the entry points to the iconic wooden suspension bridge usually involves stopping at informal pull-outs right off the main highway.
Best season
Spring and summer are highly recommended for the most animated green landscapes and pleasant temperatures within the deep valley. Autumn is also spectacular for photography, while winters can make the steep valley roads slick and somewhat treacherous.
Terrain & paths
The reservoir is a narrow, meandering body of water tightly constrained by steep, high mountains on either side. The surrounding paths are mostly uneven dirt tracks, and crossing the famously swaying wooden suspension bridge requires a good sense of balance.
What to bring
Sturdy, rubber-soled footwear is advisable for exploring the rocky banks and safely crossing the suspension bridge. Bringing a good camera is highly encouraged to capture the peaceful atmosphere, along with basic snacks and drinks as amenities are sparse.

Safety
Extreme care is needed when walking along the main road from your vehicle to the lakeside viewpoints. The wooden suspension bridge can be swaying and somewhat rickety, so cross slowly, hold the handrails, and supervise children very closely.
Time needed
Most travelers treat this reservoir as a highly scenic, one-hour stopover to walk the bridge and take photographs during a longer road trip. A more dedicated visit, perhaps involving a lakeside picnic or brief hike, might extend to two or three hours.
