Castle of Sarda (Albania)

Weather…

The Castle of Sarda, now known as Shurdhah Island, was once a thriving medieval city in northern Albania. Originally located on a peninsula along the Drin River, it became an island in the 1970s following the construction of the Vau i Dejës dam. During the Middle Ages, Sarda was a significant religious and cultural center, serving as a bishopric with numerous churches and monasteries. The city acted as a strategic gateway between the northern highlands and the coastal plains. Most of the ruins visible today date from the 11th to the 15th centuries, consisting of defensive walls, church remnants, and residential foundations. Sarda was closely associated with the prominent Dukagjini noble family before it lost its importance following the Ottoman conquest, leading to its eventual abandonment. The archaeological site provides vital clues about medieval urban planning and ecclesiastical architecture in the region, and is accessible only by boat today.
