Buna River (Albania)

Weather…

The Buna is a 44-kilometer-long river in northwestern Albania, serving as the only major outlet for Lake Shkodra and marking the border with Montenegro. Due to its extremely low gradient of just a few meters over its entire length, the Buna is the country's only navigable river, although sedimentation currently hinders larger vessels. The river flows into the Adriatic Sea through an extensive delta, an internationally significant Ramsar site for the protection of waterbirds. A unique hydrological feature is the backflow phenomenon: during high water levels in the Adriatic or the Drin River, saltwater can penetrate kilometers upstream. Historically, the Buna was a strategic trade route connecting the city of Shkodra directly to the Mediterranean Sea.
