Matobo Rhino Habitat (Zimbabwe)

Weather…

The Matobo Rhino Habitat, located within Matobo National Park, is a critical sanctuary for both black and white rhinoceros populations in Zimbabwe. The unique terrain, characterized by massive granite formations known as 'kopjes', provides excellent cover and natural boundaries for these endangered mammals. Due to the persistent threat of poaching, the area is designated as an Intensive Protection Zone (IPZ), monitored around the clock by highly trained ranger units. The park has one of the highest densities of rhinos in Africa and is globally recognized for its successful breeding and translocation programs. Beyond rhinos, Matobo is famous for its high leopard population and the world's largest concentration of black eagles. The area also holds immense cultural significance, containing a wealth of ancient San rock art sites. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, the habitat represents a seamless blend of ecological conservation and archaeological heritage. Guided rhino tracking on foot is a major highlight for visitors, directly funding the park's protection efforts.
