The Mzingwane River, also referred to as the Umzingwane, is a major left-bank tributary of the Limpopo River in southwestern Zimbabwe. It originates near Figtree and flows southeasterly through the semi-arid region of Matabeleland South. Due to the area's erratic rainfall, the river's flow is managed by several large dams, including the Umzingwane and Lower Mzingwane dams, which are indispensable for the water supply of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe's second-largest city. Historically, the Mzingwane basin was inhabited by early Sotho and Ndebele settlements. The riverbed is characteristically sandy and often appears dry on the surface except after heavy rains, yet it retains significant alluvial aquifers. This sub-surface water is frequently accessed via sand abstraction for irrigation and livestock. The riparian vegetation along the banks serves as a crucial habitat for various bird species and small mammals within the parched landscape.
