Bulawayo Hills
The hills south of Bulawayo, famously known as the Matobo Hills, are a spectacular landscape of granite kopjes and massive boulders formed over two billion years ago through tectonic activity. This area was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2003 due to its immense ecological and spiritual significance. The hills host one of the highest concentrations of San (Bushmen) rock art in the world, with some paintings dating back 13,000 years. Atop the Malindidzimu hill lies the grave of Cecil Rhodes, situated at a spot he famously named 'World’s View.' The flora is exceptionally diverse, featuring over 200 species of trees, while the national park serves as a critical sanctuary for endangered black and white rhinoceroses. Geologically, the range is a batholith whose outer layers have weathered through exfoliation, creating the iconic 'balancing rocks.' The region remains a sacred site for local people, who continue to perform traditional Mwali ceremonies here.
