The Chizarira Hills in the inaccessible northwest of Zimbabwe are among the wildest and least explored regions of the country. These rugged, deeply incised mountain ranges rise dramatically above the Zambezi Valley and offer spectacular cliffs, deep gorges, and steep slopes. The area is home to the Chizarira National Park, one of Zimbabwe's most remote protected areas, famous for its untamed wilderness. The rugged topography, dominated by rocky outcrops and densely forested valleys, makes the area difficult to navigate and requires a true spirit of adventure. The mountains are a refuge for a rich variety of wildlife, including leopards, elephants, and four of the "Big Five". The Chizarira Hills are particularly popular with birdwatchers as they host rare birds of prey, including the rare Taita falcon. The untouched nature has an authentic, rugged African experience far from the tourist trails.

Getting there
Journeying to this rugged mountain region in the north-west is almost exclusively done via difficult dirt tracks far from the main highways. Only experienced drivers operating robust off-road vehicles should attempt the trip into this remote area.
Best season
The dry and cooler months are absolutely convenient for hiking in the hills, as visibility is clear and you avoid the oppressive midday heat. During the wet season, flash floods transform the dirt tracks into dangerous mud pits, making the region inaccessible.
Terrain & paths
The profile of the hills is unforgiving, featuring deep cliffs, steep rock faces, and dense bushlands in the lower elevations. There are practically no paved trails, requiring constant orientation and very sure-footed walking on rough terrain.
What to bring
Absolute prerequisites include sturdy mountaineering boots, a reliable compass or GPS, and thick clothing against thorny undergrowth. Since there are no supply points, visitors must carry all their own food, first-aid gear, and massive amounts of water.
Parking
There are naturally no formal parking lots in this wild region; cars are typically left near the sparse and isolated ranger posts. The vehicle should be securely locked and kept inaccessible to animals for the entire duration of your expedition.
Safety
The extreme isolation and presence of potentially dangerous wildlife make hiking without a licensed, armed guide incredibly risky. Always inform third parties about your exact planned route and your expected time of return to civilization.
Time needed
A serious exploration of these remote mountain ranges usually takes several days, often in the form of organized trekking safaris. For a fleeting impression, a very long day hike departing from one of the few base camps might just be sufficient.
