The Mwata Kazembe Palace, located in Mwansabombwe in the Luapula Province, serves as the traditional seat of power for the Lunda people of the Luapula Valley. Established as a permanent capital in the 19th century, it represents the continuation of one of Central Africa's most organized pre-colonial states. The palace complex is the focal point for the Mutomboko ceremony, an annual event commemorating the Lunda migration from the DR Congo into Zambia. Historically, the Kazembe dynasty controlled the lucrative trade in ivory and copper between the interior and the East African coast. The current architecture reflects both traditional influences and modern administrative requirements. It remains a crucial symbol of cultural identity and political authority for the Lunda people today.
