Guelmim is located in southwestern Morocco and is known as the 'Gateway to the Sahara.' The city is the capital of the Guelmim-Oued Noun region and was historically a major hub for caravan trade between Senegal, Timbuktu, and northern Morocco. Guelmim is particularly famous for its camel market (Amhalf), which is considered one of the largest in the country and takes place every Saturday. The city is predominantly inhabited by Sahrawi tribes, reflected in local attire, language (Hassania), and cultural heritage. A cultural highlight is the Guedra dance, a ritual dance performed during traditional festivals. The surrounding area features impressive oases and ancient fortified granaries (Agadirs), testifying to the population's adaptation to the arid climate. More recently, Guelmim has become an important base for desert tourism and the exploration of prehistoric rock engravings in the region.
