Port Sandwich Wharf is located on the southeast coast of Malakula Island and is one of the deepest and best-protected natural harbors in all of Vanuatu. The harbor was named by Captain James Cook in 1774, who anchored there during his second South Pacific voyage. During the colonial era of the British-French Condominium, Port Sandwich served as a significant administrative and economic center, particularly for the French administration. The current wharf is primarily used for the export of copra and cocoa, the most important agricultural products of the region. Its strategic location makes it a vital port of call for maritime shipping between the northern islands of the archipelago. Despite its isolation, the wharf remains a central site for local trade and the supply of surrounding villages in South Malakula. The ruins of old colonial buildings nearby testify to the harbor's former importance as a major outpost in the Pacific.
