Visiting
South West Bay on Malakula is an open bay and can be visited for free at any time. There are no entry controls - visitors can explore the beach and mangrove forests. Access is via small paths or by boat.
Typical hours
As a natural harbor there are no visiting hours - the bay can be visited 24/7. The best time is during daylight to see the deep bay and surrounding mountains. Early morning the birdlife in the mangroves is especially active.
Photography
Photography is highly recommended - the combination of deep blue water, mountains and mangroves provides spectacular subjects. A wide-angle lens works well for panoramic shots. Watch out for water reflections in bright sunlight.
Time needed
A visit to the bay can last 1-2 hours depending on how far you walk along the beach. For a boat tour through the mangroves, plan half a day. The peaceful seclusion invites a longer stay.

Combine the trip with visiting nearby villages on Malakula where you can see traditional pottery. The offshore islands like Uripiv are also worthwhile day-trip destinations. Several local guides offer hiking tours.
Getting there
South West Bay is best reached by boat from the Malakula capital Lakatoro. The trip takes about 30-45 minutes. Alternatively you can drive with a 4WD on dirt roads, which are often in poor condition.
Insider tip
Ask in Lakatoro for a local guide - the paths through the mangroves are hard to find without local knowledge. Bring plenty of mosquito repellent as there are many insects in the mangroves. The water is calm, good for kayakers.
