Malakula Central Range (Vanuatu)

Weather…

The Malakula Central Range forms the mountainous backbone of Vanuatu's second-largest island, Malakula. This range extends nearly the entire length of the island, reaching heights of up to 879 meters. It serves as a crucial barrier to the prevailing trade winds, resulting in significant climate differences between the humid east and the drier western side. The mountain range is blanketed in dense tropical rainforest, regarded as one of the least disturbed forests in the country and home to a rich fauna. Historically, the Central Range was a site of intense tribal conflicts and cultural demarcation between mountain tribes and coastal dwellers. The topography is extremely rugged with deep valleys and sharp ridges, which has prevented road development to this day. Many communities living in this region preserve their traditional kastom practices, making Malakula one of the most culturally authentic locations in Vanuatu.

Getting there
Access is via unpaved tracks from Lakatoro or Norsup, requiring a 4WD vehicle to reach the remote starting points of the various jungle trails.
📅
Best season
The cooler and drier period from May to October is best suited to avoid the deep mud on the forest paths and to enjoy more comfortable temperatures for hiking.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
You will hike through dense primary forest with steep climbs and numerous stream crossings, where the ground is almost always damp and slippery due to high humidity.
🎒
What to bring
Lightweight, quick-drying clothing is advisable, as well as insect repellent and a mosquito net for overnight stays, plus robust hiking boots with a deep tread pattern.
🅿️
Parking
Secure parking is only available in the main towns; near the trailheads, you often need to coordinate with village elders to leave your vehicle on their property.
