Nevytske Castle is located about 12 kilometers north of Uzhhorod, perched on a steep hill overlooking the Uzh River valley. The fortress was originally established in the 13th century to control the mountain passes into the Carpathians. Much of its current layout dates from the 15th century when it was owned by the Drugeth family. It represents a classic medieval defensive structure, featuring a deep moat, massive curtain walls, and a prominent square central tower that remains its most recognizable feature. The castle's active history ended in 1644 when it was destroyed by the forces of the Transylvanian Prince George I Rákóczi, and it has remained in ruins ever since. A popular local legend tells of the 'Evil Maiden,' a cruel countess who supposedly mixed blood into the mortar used for the castle's construction. Today, the ruins are a favorite spot for hikers and photographers, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the Uzh River. The trail to the castle leads through a pleasant forest and is moderately easy to climb. Nearby, there is a small dam and a recreation area along the river. While the site is a ruin, the scale of its former fortifications is still impressive. The best time to visit is during the autumn months when the surrounding foliage turns spirited colors, highlighting the atmospheric and mystical nature of the stone remains.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
