St. Nicholas Cathedral Nizhyn (Ukraine)

Weather…

The St. Nicholas Cathedral in Nizhyn is one of the earliest and most significant monuments of Ukrainian Baroque (Cossack Baroque). Built between 1658 and 1668, it was funded by the Nizhyn Regiment under the leadership of Hetman Ivan Zolotarenko. The building is characterized by its monumental five-domed structure based on a cross-shaped floor plan, reaching an impressive height of 55 meters. Its architecture served as a prototype for many subsequent religious buildings in the Hetmanate, symbolizing the religious and political rise of the Cossack elite. Inside, the cathedral once housed a magnificent iconostasis and was the site of important ceremonies, including the election of Hetman Ivan Briukhovetsky in 1663. Despite severe damage during the Soviet era, when the building was repurposed as a warehouse, the cathedral was restored after 1990 and today stands as a prominent landmark of the city of Nizhyn.
