Vihorlat Protected Landscape Area (Slovakia)

Weather…

In the extreme east of Slovakia, the Vihorlat Protected Landscape Area, established in 1973, protects a 149-square-kilometer volcanic mountain massif. The landscape is almost entirely blanketed by closed, primeval-like beech forests, which, due to their untouched and pristine nature, have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage list as part of the "Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians." Past geological activity has left behind prominent volcanic cones, deep valleys, and, above all, the largest Slovak volcanic lake, Morské oko (Sea Eye). The harsh climatic conditions and dense forests make the Vihorlat a premier refuge for Europe's shy large predators. The brown bear, wolf, lynx, and the extremely rare wildcat roam the uninhabited terrain. The protected area is strictly regulated, with tourist activities limited to a few designated paths, such as the ascent to the prominent peak of Sninský kameň (1006 m).
